This month in celebration of perhaps the
biggest national holiday in the USA – Independence
Day on the 4th July – we are making a
whistle stop tour of a few of the fifty US
states which have inspired some of the most
popular and well known cocktail recipes ever.
We hope that you will enjoy the in-the-spirit
mini US tour – and trying out all the
recipes we have chosen.

Moving from the East Coast to the West, we start off our selection with our Cape
Cooler cocktail recipe (also known as the Cape Cod Cooler). Made from vodka, Cranberry juice, soda (or tonic water) and freshly squeezed lime juice,
this is a deliciously long and refreshing summer cocktail. This cocktail recipe
is believed to be named after the area around Cape Cod in the state of Massachusetts
which produces America’s second largest cranberry crop.

Still on the East Coast, our next Stateside cocktail recommendation is the Long
Island Iced Tea. According to many sources, this cocktail was created during
the Prohibition era in the 1920’s and was thought to look like Iced Tea – hence
the name. However just to re-assure you, it has absolutely no tea in it but does
contain a range of alcohol ingredients you are likely to have in your drinks
collection: white rum, gin, tequila, Triple
Sec and vodka. Although this is quite
a combination of spirit ingredients, if the recipe is served correctly using
the modest measures specified and not overwhelmed with cola, then it is a cooling
and refreshing, long cocktail with a splash of lime. Perfect for summer!

Travelling south – we have a splash of colour to Florida, we have the Miami
cocktail. Perhaps the colour of this cocktail was inspired by the local Florida
Everglades or even the pastel coloured designer suits worn by Don Johnson in
the 1980’s Miami Vice TV series! Whatever its origin, this is an exquisite
blend of White Rum and De
Kuyper Crème de Menthe balanced with a dash
of lemon juice. Served in a martini glass, this is a stylish cocktail to be seen
with.

Moving in a north-westerly direction, our US cocktail tour brings us to Lynchburg,
Tennessee. Lynchburg is the home town of the Jack Daniels Distillery. Many people
believe Jack Daniels is a bourbon – although it is a whiskey aged in charred
barrels it is not actually a bourbon. It is in fact a Tennessee whiskey which,
means that (unlike bourbon) it is filtered through up to 12 feet of ground up
maple charcoal which can take up to 10 days. The whiskey then absorbs the essence
of the charcoal, giving it a unique aroma and flavour. Jack Daniel himself set
up his distillery in Lynchburg at the age of 20 in 1870. The Lynchburg
Lemonade cocktail recipe is a tribute to the hometown of Jack. Made with Jack Daniels
Tennessee whiskey, De Kuyper Triple Sec, lemon juice and topped up with lemonade – this
is light and tangy and a very easy long drink.

Our final stop on the in-the-spirit US tour brings us to the West Coast and California
to the magical world that is Hollywood. The Sunset
Boulevard cocktail could be
inspired simply by the name of the stylish boulevard or by the 1950’s film
of the same name about ageing film star Norma Desmond (later reworked into the
successful stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber). Our recipe for the Sunset Boulevard
cocktail is an elegant combination of vodka, Peach Schnapps mixed
with cranberry and orange juice. This is a luscious combination of cocktail ingredients
that will make you feel like a movie star.
We
hope that you have enjoyed checking out our
stateside serving suggestions and that you
have fun trying them for yourself! Keep in-the-spirit!
